24 Season 8 Episode 7 ‘10:00PM – 11:00PM’ Recap

Posted by: admin   in Recap · Comments (0)

I’m going to whine a lot about this episode, so that’s just a little warning to anyone absolutely loving this season of ‘24.’ But first, let’s talk about the great scene where Renee goes ballistic, stabs Vladimir, then accidentally stabs Jack. Then Jack takes the knife out and hurls it at the other guy coming in the door. Awesome!

020910 0932 24Season8Ep11 24 Season 8 Episode 7 10:00PM 11:00PM Recap

Ok, now for the bad stuff. For one thing, I thought we were going to get to see Renee kick some major butt this season. So far, she’s just a wimpy female with a big fat vengeance chip on her shoulder who still gets knocked around by the bad guys (excepting that awesome scene noted above). Come on, Renee! I want a female Jack Bauer, not some sniveling sap!

The WTF aspects of ‘24′ these days are just too WTF to ignore. Why don’t we take them one by one:

WTF #1. I know Jack is a badass who can take any sort of torture and spring back to life, but that was no small knife wound he got in his mid-section. Yet he’s able to bandage himself, jump back up, talk some sense into Renee, and give himself over to the bad guys so the deal isn’t all for naught. I know it’s ‘24,’ but … I don’t think so.

WTF #2.
I mentioned last week that it seemed unrealistic that Dana would be able to secure access codes for a warehouse that’s housing a LOT of stuff, as we saw in this episode, in such a short time. Not to mention the fact that she’s working for the FBI, so wouldn’t they have done a teensy bit better background check on her? And given that there IS so much stuff in the warehouse, doesn’t it seem like they’d have someone on permanent security duty there, rather than just a cop wandering through every now and then to check on things? Or at the very least, someone monitoring the security cameras 24/7?

WTF #3. Let’s stick with the warehouse, since it’s so craptastically WTF. Did Dana really think the guys wouldn’t take more than just the $120K? They’re clearly lacking in judgment, given their history, so she’d have to be a numbskull to think they wouldn’t be stuffing multiple duffel bags with whatever they could get their hands on.

WTF #4. And are the guys so stupid that they wouldn’t think to wear gloves? Their fingerprints are all over that place! It’s like they’re hooligans robbing a drugstore or something.

WTF #5.
Did Bazhaev really say he wanted Oleg buried “out back”? I didn’t run the DVR back, so you can tell me if I’ve got that right. Seriously, it’s like he’s burying his pet goldfish in the backyard or something. Not only that, but to tell Josef that his goal with the nuclear deal is to leave him and his family with a wealthy inheritance and respect? Really? How about get a good job and open a 401K? That works, too.

WTF #6. Why, oh why must the Russians always be the bad guys? Are there no good Russians in the world? Just once, I’d like to see somebody switch it up and make the Russians the good guys.

WTF #7. The President’s peace treaty. Eh, just WTF. I don’t even know what to say about this because the storyline is so nothing. Back in the good old days of ‘24,’ all the storylines had equal value, and each thing hinged together beautifully like a big house of cards ready to topple over. Not so this season.

WTF #8.
Hassan’s idea to have Jamot’s family “detained.” Who are we kidding? There’s going to be torture involved. So this guy who seemingly has been an upright person so far suddenly has a change of heart and goes all rogue and evil?

‘24′ Season 8 Episode 6 ‘9:00PM-10:00PM’ Recap

Posted by: admin   in Recap · Comments (0)

“If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, we don’t do that anymore.” – Hastings to Jack, on using unsavory methods with the Russians

Oh, snap. The Russians may have bought Renee’s cover, but that doesn’t mean she’s out of danger. Just the opposite, especially given the fact that she’s a loose cannon and doesn’t seem to care whether she lives or dies at this point. Or maybe that’s not necessarily true.

020310 1437 24Season8E1 24 Season 8 Episode 6 9:00PM 10:00PM Recap

At the beginning of this episode, I wrote in my notes that you just know the relationship she once had with Vladimir will come crashing down eventually. And by the time I got done writing that note, it did. Vlad wants more, and even apologized for treating her badly and trying to rape her one night long ago. “It’s good to see you,” he said. “You’re going to make me start losing sleep again … you want this just as much as I do.”

But Renee is having none of it, which makes me think she’s not as tough as she makes herself out to be. If she was, she wouldn’t mind cozying up to Vlad in order to stay undercover and keep the mission on track. “I’m going dark,” she tells Jack, and takes her bug out. It’s really interesting to see the role switch between Jack and Renee. Usually he’s the live wire, but now he’s in the position of having to look after her.

And that Vlad is some catch, eh? “Look, I was just trying to make things right. You don’t have to be such a bitch about it.” Way to get the girl. The whole thing is a house of cards.

Meanwhile, Dana is still stressed out over Wade’s hold on her. She doesn’t seem that far up the food chain at CTU to be able to create a key card and talk him through the security codes to get the impounded drugs out of the warehouse. And .. “I help you do this, and you never call me again,” she tells him. “That’s the deal.” Riiiggghhhttt …

And the whole situation with Arlo, Chloe and Dana at CTU reminds me so much of the early days of ‘24,’ with Tony, Michelle and Chloe all giving each other the eye at the old CTU. “Oh yeah, I’m jealous,” Chloe taunts at Arlo. “Won’t you stare at my ass as I walk away?” And of course, he does.

Let’s talk about Jack and Ortiz. Jack made no bones about the fact that he’s in charge and Oriz better follow his lead. Even though Ortiz has some experience and was involved in a similar operation, Jack knows that one little slip-up can bring the whole operation down. What do you bet that Ortiz will make some bad decision on his own that causes things to fall apart? Fortunately, he had Jack’s back tonight.

Jack as a a bespectacled, cigarette-smoking buyer! Don’t turn your back on them, Jack! But of course, he was ready for anything, thank goodness.

And what’s up with Bazhaev? Josef and Oleg really hit the jackpot with him as a dad, didn’t they? “There are rules, Josef, and they must never be broken.” Then he pumps several bullets into Oleg’s chest. “Never disobey me again,” he tells his first-born. Talk about daddy issues.

24 Season 8 Episode 5 – 8:00PM-9:00PM – Recap

Posted by: admin   in Recap · Comments (0)

I think this season just blew up. After loving the first four hours in last week’s two-night 24
premiere, hour five of Jack Bauer’s eighth bad day crashed and burned pretty hard. While the main plot involving Jack and Renee is worth watching, it still has one big glaring misstep that I had a hard time getting over last night. As for the rest of the minor subplots? We can only hope they tie in to the rest of the story, because right now, very little of it is interesting.

012710 1852 24Season8Ep1 24 Season 8 Episode 5 8:00PM 9:00PM Recap

After Hastings allowed Renee to resume her cover with the Russians last week, things got exciting fast when she cut off Zia’s finger — it seemed as though Renee was picking up right where Jack left off. But now, as details of her previous undercover stint emerge, it just doesn’t jive with what we know about Renee.

She was a mole years ago, well before Day 7 in DC with Jack and while right now, she’s a bit crazy, last season that side of her wasn’t there at all. Yet, if Vlad, the Russian ringleader had beaten her and attempted to rape her as Jack and Chloe discovered, isn’t it fair to assume that she would have carried some of that mental luggage with her last season? This was obviously a thread created just to supplement this season, but it’s negating all that we knew about Renee.

Anyway, despite the major gripe, Renee’s ability to manipulate Vlad and get back in his good graces (even though many of his goons suspected her being a Fed the first time around) was very entertaining to watch. The only ambiguous moment was when Vlad had the gun to her head. I’m guessing, though, that there’s a kernel of truth to what she said — she has no one and death is obviously something she’s considered before (don’t forget the scars). The big question going into next week will be whether or not she’s in this to help find the nuclear rods or if she’s in this for revenge for what Vlad did to her.

As for the rest of the episode, there’s far too many minor subplots and as of right now, there’s no reason whatsoever to be invested in them at all. I don’t care about Dana/Jenny and her rough-and-tumble teenage years. I don’t care about the fact that she was an accessory to murder or that she spent some time in jail. I just can’t see any payoff worth caring about coming out of this. The same goes for Josef Bazhaev and his brother with the radiation poisoning… big deal!

The only thing I’m on the fence about right now is Hassan. He really flipped the switch in this episode and we saw some shades of his dictator-ish side when he dealt with President Taylor and her inquiries about his human rights violations. Anil Kapoor played those scenes very well and while they don’t really relate to anything right now, I could see this playing a bigger role as the season progresses. If Taylor inadvertently rubs him the wrong way, what if he starts seeing things from his brother’s perspective? His wife left him, his brother betrayed him, his country is in shambles. All he has left is power, so what’s he got to lose?
